Mohamed Benyahya Takes Over as Director General for Energy Efficiency in Morocco

Morocco’s King Mohammed VI announced on Friday the appointment of Mohamed Benyahya as the Director General of the Moroccan Agency for Energy Efficiency, a public institution whose mission is to contribute to implementing the national energy policy to reduce the country’s energy dependence and preserve the environment.

Mohamed Benyahya, renowned for his expertise in the environmental sciences and specialization in ecotoxicology, holds a doctorate from the Ecological Research Center of the University of Metz in France. After graduating in 1991, Benyahya demonstrated his dedication to sustainable development throughout an extensive career where he worked in multiple research centres and public institutions. 

From 2000 to 2004, he became Head of the Partnership Division at the Ministry responsible for Land Management, Environment, Urban Planning, and Housing. His professional journey includes various critical roles in environmental management and sustainable development. 

Notably, he served as Head of the Budget and Human Resources Division at the Secretariat of State in charge of Water and the Environment in 2008. He was an Advisor on Sustainable Development at the Mohammed VI Foundation for the Protection of the Environment in 2007. 

Following this, he assumed the Director of Partnership, Cooperation, and Communication position at the State Secretariat for Sustainable Development from 2008 to 2017 before becoming Secretary-General for the Department of Sustainable Development that same year. In 2022, Benyahya assumed the position of Acting Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development’s Department of Energy Transition. 

His contributions on the international stage have been equally significant. In 2015, he was appointed as the Chief Negotiator of the Moroccan Delegation to the global climate summit COP 21 in Paris and played a pivotal role in advocating for environmental initiatives. The following year, he served as a member of the Steering Committee of the COP 22 in Marrakech, responsible for overseeing the Side-Events Pole.

With his extensive experience in environmental sciences and sustainable development, Mohamed Benyahya now assumes the vital role of Director General of the Moroccan Agency for Energy Efficiency. In this capacity, he will be instrumental in driving initiatives and strategies that promote energy efficiency, a crucial aspect of Morocco’s commitment to sustainable development and climate action.
