A 166km overhead power transmission line connecting consumers in the Kagera region to the national grid will be built in Tanzania thanks to a $60 million loan from the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries Fund for International Development (OPEC Fund). The building of the transmission line will be supported by a $60 million loan from the OPEC Fund, a $30 million loan from the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, a $12.8 million loan from the Saudi Fund for Development, and $2.6 million in funding from the Tanzanian government.
By completing the project, Tanzania’s brand-new 80 MW Rusumo and 87 MW Kakono hydropower plants, which are anticipated to become operational by 2024 and 2030, respectively, will be able to provide electricity to clients in Kagera.
