- UNEP’s report exposes Fossil Fuel production ahead of COP28.
- Lack of Consensus among countries on phase-out dates for coal, gas, and oil, despite the urgent need.
UNEP’s stark report before COP28 reveals a stark disconnect indicating that 2030 global fossil fuel production exceeds Paris Climate Agreement goals. This report precedes COP28 in the UAE, an oil-rich nation. The report by UNEP highlights a concerning reality. This says global fossil fuel production will double what’s needed for Paris Agreement climate goals.
Despite the scientific consensus on the urgent need to cut fossil fuel use, countries are yet to agree on phase-out dates for coal, gas, and oil. None of the countries assessed in the report commits to aligning fossil fuel production with the crucial goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C. Experts from SEI, the International Institute for Sustainable Development, and the policy institute climate analytics contribute to the UNEP report. This will emphasise the immediate need for global action on the climate crisis.
