Germany aims for 250-600 GWh of commercial hydrogen storage by 2030. Uniper is analysing new sites and considering repurposing existing gas storage in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia. They are consulting the market to forecast demand and plan expansion until March.
Uniper is testing hydrogen storage in two projects: Hydrogen Pilot Cavern (HPC) in Krummhoern and HyStorage in Bierwang. HPC targets 250 GWh capacity initially, with room for expansion, set for Q3 2029 commissioning.
HyStorage, with partners like OGE and RAG Austria, assesses hydrogen’s impact on porous rock formations for storage.
