In collaboration with the Borno State Government, the North East Development Commission (NEDC) is training 115 persons on renewable energy and waste management. The training areas include solar power installation, efficient stoves/Briquette fabrication, waste management and recycling in Maiduguri, Borno State. The coordinator of the training, Dr Zainab Mohammed, speaking at the five-day training workshop held today at the Indimi International Conference Centre, University of Maiduguri, said that the participants, primarily youths, would undergo training on waste management and waste recycling.
She disclosed that the training aims to empower the people and give them self-reliance to get back on their feet after the decade of Boko Haram insurgency in the state. Also speaking at the event, the Managing Director of NEDC, Mohammed Alkali, represented by NEDC’s coordinator for Borno State, Engr Umaru Mohammed, noted that the workshop is ongoing simultaneously in the six states of the Northeast, including Yobe, Gombe, Adamawa, Bauchi and Taraba. According to the commission, the workshop aims to help the trainees enhance recyclables into more profitable products with low-cost products. It also aims to provide participants with an in-depth knowledge of recycling products, including how to use, reuse and recycle their products.
On his part, the coordinator for renewable energy, Dr Mohammed Bukar, said 40 people benefited from the exercise. He stated that the new trend of attacks on electricity installations in Borno State is alarming; hence, there is a need to train the youths on renewable energy and solar power installation. Bukar said this exercise would end the menace of frequent power failure resulting from the activities of the Boko Haram terrorists. He added that at the end of the training, the NEDC would give participants starter packs such as solar batteries and inverters, among others.
