Électricité de France (EDF) has acquired upOwa, a solar home system start-up, bolstering rural electrification efforts in Cameroon. Founded in 2014 and based in Yaoundé, upOwa has provided electricity to over 140,000 people across sub-Saharan Africa, with significant growth since 2019 under the Renewable Energy Performance Platform (REPP).
Led by Loic Descamps, upOwa’s innovative pay-as-you-go model has facilitated the adoption of solar solutions in remote households. The acquisition strengthens EDF’s presence in Cameroon’s energy landscape.
This aligns with its construction of the 420 MW Nachtigal hydroelectric dam on the Sanaga River. This is set to begin operations in 2024. Additionally, EDF is developing the Kikot hydroelectric project, located 60 km northwest of Yaoundé, with a capacity of 500 MW, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable energy development in Cameroon.
