Japanese utility Electric Power Development Co Ltd (J-Power), in collaboration with Mitsubishi Materials Corporation and Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company Inc, has inaugurated the Appi Geothermal Power Plant in Iwate Prefecture.
This marks a significant milestone in Japan’s renewable energy sector. The plant, which commenced commercial operations today, represents the growing commitment to sustainable energy in the region.
Also, construction of the Appi Geothermal Power Plant started in August 2019 in Hachimantai city, a project that underscores a joint venture aimed at bolstering Japan’s renewable energy output.
The Geothermal Power Plant has a capacity of 14.9 MW and will contribute substantially to the local power supply. This is while adhering to the Japanese Feed-In Tariff (FIT) system designed to encourage renewable energy use.
This initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions and provide a stable electricity supply to the local community. The Appi Geothermal Power Plant project received financial backing from the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security, which offered a debt guarantee for geothermal resource development.
Also, this landmark project marks the first time in 28 years that a geothermal power plant with a capacity exceeding 10 MW has been constructed and operated in Iwate Prefecture. It showcases the potential of geothermal energy in Japan, a country that sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” and is home to numerous volcanic regions, making it an ideal location for geothermal energy production.
The Appi Geothermal Power Plant, alongside the previously established 46-MW Wasabizawa Geothermal Power Plant in Akita Prefecture, represents a significant step forward in the utilization of Japan’s geothermal resources.
Furthermore, Japan’s continuous expansion of its renewable energy footprint, the Appi Geothermal Power Plant, stands as a beacon of progress and innovation in the energy sector.
It signifies a shift towards more sustainable energy sources, demonstrating the country’s commitment to environmental stewardship and the global fight against climate change. With such initiatives, Japan is steadily moving towards a greener, more sustainable future.
