French company Sunna Design completes the installation of 30,000 solar streetlights in Togo’s rural areas. Lights are mainly installed in the Savanes and Kara regions—an initiative of the Solar Public Lighting Programme (PEP’S rural project) by the Togolese Agency for Rural Electrification and Renewable Energies (AT2ER).
It aims to illuminate 4,600 rural areas for safety and productivity. Sunna Design emphasises the role of light in transportation, work, and education after sunset—a partnership with the Togolese government to be formalised by the end of 2021.
Sunna committed to installing 50,000 lights in 12,000 villages. The project is supported financially by the French Treasury. This is set to benefit 1.5 million people.
The initiative aligns with Togo’s strategy to accelerate nationwide electrification. According to German International Development Cooperation Agency (GIZ) data, Togo’s electricity access rate is 60% as of 2021.
