Geometric Power, the Aba Integrated Power Project (Aba IPP) operator, has announced that the meter penetration rate in Aba under the IPP project is at 25 per cent and is growing.
On Tuesday, March 26, the company said its mass-metering initiative has significantly elevated the meter penetration rate to almost 25%, with ongoing rapid progress. Their efforts have led to the successful metering of their maximum-demand customers, three extensive feeders, ongoing projects to meter the fourth feeder, and a special community initiative.
While celebrating one month of the successful adoption of the Aba IPP, Geometric Power said that in the last month, the project has conducted technical assessments on all three turbines. Progressively, they are enhancing power output, channelling it into each feeder, and enhancing Aba’s overall power supply quality.
Concurrently, as part of the company’s commitment to operational excellence, groundwork is underway to promote transparency in energy consumption across Abia state communities.
A part of the company’s statement on March 26 noted:
“Reflecting on our acquisition of the Aba Ring-fence in 2022, a mere 18 months ago, it is notable that the meter penetration rate was below 5% across the nine LGAs under our jurisdiction. Hence, we have prioritized the installation of meters within our network.”
Facts about the Aba IPP
The project, initiated in 2004, encountered numerous hurdles, delaying its anticipated completion. However, despite these challenges, the company remained poised to deliver an uninterrupted power supply to the bustling commercial hub of Aba and its surrounding areas.
Geometric Power, the driving force behind this transformative initiative, has committed substantial resources, amounting to over $800 million, towards the endeavour. The project’s comprehensive scope entails installing four turbines, boasting a collective capacity of 188 megawatts (MW). These turbines will be commissioned in stages, aiming to reach maximum capacity over time, ensuring a steady and reliable power supply for the region.
