The Angola government has opened the 26.14-MW Saurimo solar park project in the Lunda Sul province, east of Angola. The Saurimo solar park will have 44,850 solar panels to generate enough clean electricity to meet the demand of around 171,000 people.
According to the Ministry of Energy and Water, the photovoltaic (PV) project required an investment of EUR 38.8 million (USD 41.8m) to complete the project.
The Saurimo solar farm is part of a group of seven parks totalling 370 MWp, located in Benguela, Huambo, Bie, Lunda Norte and Moxico. The ministry expects the whole bundle to be up and running by the end of this year.
Furthermore, when these parks are operational, the country can reduce diesel consumption by around 1.4 million litres.
