- Morocco is launching a wind power initiative through a public-private partnership (PPP).
- Two wind farms in northern Morocco to boost renewable energy capacity.
Morocco is accelerating its renewable energy efforts with a new wind power initiative. The Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN) is spearheading the project, aiming to build two wind farms in northern Morocco. These farms, part of the Nassim Nord program, will significantly increase the country’s wind power capacity.
The larger wind farm, Nassim Dar Chaoui, targets an installed capacity of 250 MW. An extension of the existing Nassim Koudia Al Baida wind farm will add another 250 MW to Morocco’s national grid. Interested developers have until June 24, 2024, to submit proposals for the project.
The selected private company will handle development, financing, construction, and operation. By structuring the initiative as a project financing scheme, MASEN intends to involve Moroccan and international commercial banks, facilitating funding for the ambitious project.
The Nassim Nord program aligns with Morocco’s goal of achieving a renewable-origin electricity mix of at least 52% by 2030. Wind farms contribute just over 2 GW out of a total capacity of 11.4 GW. This initiative signals Morocco’s commitment to a sustainable energy future.
Through this public-private partnership, Morocco sets a precedent for renewable energy expansion in the region. The initiative bolsters the country’s renewable energy sector and contributes to global efforts in combating climate change.
