German Envoy Tasks Nigeria to Fight Climate Change

Jennifer Lee Morgan, German State Secretary and Special Representative for International Climate Policy has stated that to mitigate the threat of climate change, Nigeria needs to quickly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and harness the power of the sun to improve citizens’ lives.

Morgan highlighted the pressing effects of climate change on the younger generation and noted the critical importance of reducing emissions to curb global warming.

She urges global cooperation and investments to aid countries like Nigeria in transitioning to renewable energy.

Germany needs to work together to attract financing and investments to countries like Nigeria and across Africa. The buildup of solar and wind energy will bring those benefits to this continent and other countries.”

She said, “I think Nigeria, with its energy transition plan, has this incredible opportunity to transition away step by step. This is why Germany and Nigeria are working closely together to build that capacity and shift in that direction over time. We are talking about a massive challenge but a great opportunity. We in Germany are moving first.

She added, “In terms of cost, we can see in Germany that the cost of renewable energy has dropped automatically, and the cost of electricity is lower because we are building about 56 per cent renewables in our electricity grid. In Africa, that is not the case. It costs eight times as much to get renewables moving as in Europe.

She noted, “It’s about harnessing the sun, which Nigeria has a great amount of, and using the latest technology to improve your life.”
