Yeo & GEI Power Invest in Zambian Photovoltaic Solar Power Plant

  • $65 million investment by Yeo and GEI Power for a photovoltaic solar power plant in Zambia.
  • Project approved by Zambian government for a 60 MWp solar plant in Choma district.

Turkey’s Yeo and local firm GEI Power plan to invest $65 million in constructing a photovoltaic solar power plant with an electricity storage system in Zambia. Francesca Chisangano Zyambo, Permanent Secretary of Zambia’s Energy Ministry, recently discussed the project with Yeo and GEI Power.

The Zambian government approved the project for constructing a 60 MWp photovoltaic solar power plant in the Choma district. The solar plant will feature a 20 MWh battery storage system, which is a joint effort between Yeo and GEI of Zambia.

Ignatius Anayawa, GEI’s Managing Director, stated that the project would create local jobs during construction and operation. The initiative aims to supply electricity to at least 65,000 Zambian households. Yeo and GEI Power established the Choma Solar Power Plant to manage the $65 million investment.

Yasin Duven, Yeo’s Vice President of Business Development, expressed commitment to Zambia’s sustainable development. The project aligns with Zambia’s strategy to diversify its energy sources due to hydroelectricity challenges caused by droughts. Zambia has turned to solar energy, inaugurating several power stations in the Copperbelt region.
