Taiwo Shittu, Chief Executive Officer of Lanre Shittu Motors Limited, has announced that by June 2024, the company will deploy many LSM-branded CNG buses at airports nationwide and for other mass transportation needs.

Shittu revealed that LSM had envisioned the future of CNG vehicles many years ago, recognizing the abundance of natural gas in Nigeria and the economic advantages for operators and commuters. He assured that plans are underway to assemble LSM-branded CNG buses in Lagos, utilizing advanced technology comparable to global standards.

Additionally, the company has the capacity to convert petrol-powered vehicles to CNG, further supporting the shift to more sustainable transportation. Addressing concerns about aftersales maintenance, Shittu guaranteed that every vehicle rolled out from their assembly plant would receive top-notch support.

He praised President Bola Tinubu for his reforms in Nigeria’s automotive sector and his initiatives in mass transportation, particularly the CNG buses project. Shittu expressed his enthusiasm for the government’s measures to revitalize auto assembly plants, focusing on CNG buses to enhance public transportation and alleviate commuter challenges.

The government’s directive prioritizing CNG buses for various ministries, departments, and agencies demonstrates a strong commitment to fostering local auto assembly. For over 40 years, Lanre Shittu Motors, founded by the Late Alhaji Lanre Shittu, has established a prestigious reputation in the automotive industry through quality products and services.

Taiwo Shittu sees the introduction of LSM-branded buses as a tribute to his father’s legacy. “We have proactively provided quality training to our technicians across various stages and categories of auto assembly and after-sales maintenance services,” Shittu said.

Upon graduation and certification, these technicians are deployed to LSM offices nationwide, collaborating with other industry stakeholders within Nigeria’s automotive value chain.

The management of Lanre Shittu Motors ensures that all company branches are equipped with state-of-the-art CNG conversion equipment, with orders being processed and executed seamlessly. The first set of compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles is scheduled for inauguration on May 29, 2024, coinciding with the current administration’s first anniversary.

It is important to note that the federal government has allocated N100 billion from the N500 billion palliative budget to purchase 5,500 CNG vehicles (including buses and tricycles), 100 electric buses, and over 20,000 CNG conversion kits. This funding also supports the expansion of CNG refilling and electric charging stations, marking a significant step towards sustainable transportation in Nigeria.

According to the Presidential CNG Initiative, vehicles running on CNG have lower operational costs than those using other fuels, and they can run on both CNG and petrol. Additionally, CNG usage extends the life of lubricating oils since it does not cause contamination.
