ACWA Power, a leading player in renewable energy and water desalination, has teamed up with the Tunisian Government to explore green hydrogen production destined for Europe.
The partnership aims to deliver 600,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually through a meticulously planned three-phase approach. ACWA Power will spearhead the development of 12GW worth of renewable energy units, complete with storage systems, transmission lines, a water desalination plant, and electrolysers.
In the initial phase, the focus will be on generating 200,000 tonnes per year of green hydrogen, all slated for export via the South2 Corridor, forging a vital connection between Tunisia and Europe.
Tunisia’s green hydrogen strategy, with a target of producing 8.3 million tons annually by 2050, perfectly dovetails with this ambitious project. Ouael Chouchene, Tunisia’s Secretary of State for Energy Transition, underscores this collaboration’s significance in driving Europe’s decarbonisation objectives and Tunisia’s economic prosperity.
Marco Arcelli, CEO of ACWA Power, champions the project’s potential to significantly contribute to Europe’s decarbonisation efforts while fostering Tunisia’s economic growth. This endeavour underscores ACWA Power’s unwavering commitment to green hydrogen expansion, as evidenced by its ongoing initiatives in NEOM and Uzbekistan.
The partnership with the Tunisian Government cements ACWA Power’s position as a global leader in renewable energy initiatives. With a portfolio boasting 82 projects in various stages of development across multiple continents, ACWA Power is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of sustainable energy solutions.
