The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has unveiled a solar photovoltaic (PV) facility at the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering at Bayero University in Kano, Nigeria.
The plant, with a total capacity of 79kWp solar PV, 58kW inverter and 60kWh battery storage, aims to provide stable, clean, affordable, and sustainable electricity to the Department and the university community.
ECOWAS Commission financed the project facilitated by the ECOWAS Special Intervention Fund (ESIF), and implemented by the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency (ECREEE).
The project reflects ECOWAS’s commitment to promoting clean energy solutions across the region, with a focus on supporting productive uses of electricity (PUE).
Several dignitaries including the ECOWAS Commissioner for Infrastructure, Sediko Douka, and the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Bayero University, Professor Mohamed Sani Gumel were present at the inauguration.
The ECOWAS Commission commended the university for its commitment to cleaner energy and more reliable electricity access, emphasising the importance of proper management for the facility’s sustainability.
The commission foresees broader impacts on energy capabilities and adoption of renewable energy technologies.
