- BOEM has approved the construction and operations plan for the 924-MW Sunrise Wind project, allowing offshore construction to commence.
- Developed by Ørsted A/S and Eversource Energy, the wind farm will supply power to New York and be operational by 2026.
- Sunrise Wind secured a 25-year renewable energy contract with NYSERDA, supporting the Biden administration’s goal of 30 GW offshore wind by 2030.
The US Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) approved the construction and operations plan (COP) for the 924-MW Sunrise Wind project, clearing the way for offshore construction.
Developed by Ørsted A/S and Eversource Energy, Sunrise Wind will supply renewable power to New York. Located south of Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, and east of Block Island, Rhode Island, the project will start offshore work later this year. Ørsted and Eversource plan to make the wind farm operational by 2026.
This approval follows the Record of Decision issued in March 2024, which concluded BOEM’s environmental review of the project. With COP approval, the project team will accelerate work on the onshore transmission system.
Sunrise Wind secured a 25-year offshore wind renewable energy certificate (OREC) contract with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) earlier this month. This contract will help deliver clean energy to New York.
Sunrise Wind’s approval aligns with the Biden administration’s goal of deploying 30 GW offshore wind by 2030. Projects like Sunrise Wind play a crucial role in reaching this target.
Sunrise Wind will contribute significantly to New York’s renewable energy goals by generating enough power for nearly 600,000 homes. The project will also support local economies through job creation and infrastructure investments.
This milestone represents significant progress for Ørsted and Eversource. Ørsted, a global leader in offshore wind, and Eversource, a primary energy provider, combine their expertise to ensure the successful development and operation of the wind farm.
Since 2019, Ørsted and Eversource have worked on the project, completing extensive environmental assessments and stakeholder consultations. These efforts were vital in obtaining the necessary permits and approvals.
The project will use state-of-the-art wind turbine technology on fixed-bottom foundations. Each turbine will generate substantial power to maximise efficiency and minimise environmental impact.
Sunrise Wind’s progress reflects the growing momentum in the offshore wind sector. As more projects receive approval and begin construction, the US advances toward a cleaner,
