BP joins Masdar, Hassan Allam Utilities, and Infinity Power to develop a large-scale green hydrogen project in Egypt. BP will lead and operate the project under a new Joint Development Agreement (JDA), focusing on exporting green hydrogen and its derivatives.
The consortium signs a Framework Agreement (FWA) with the Egyptian government to assess the project’s technical and commercial feasibility. They formalised this agreement at the Egypt-EU Investment Conference.
The signing included BP’s Regional President Nader Zaki, Hassan Allam Utilities COO Karim Hefzy, Masdar’s Green Hydrogen Director Andreas Bieringer, and Infinity Power Chairman Mohamed Ismail Mansour. Egyptian Prime Minister Dr Moustafa Madbouly, Minister of Electricity Dr Mohamed Shaker, and Minister of Planning Dr Hala El-Said witnessed the signing.
“We celebrate 60 years in Egypt with this new partnership,” said Zaki. “We commit to supporting Egypt’s energy needs and its transition to sustainable energy.”
Masdar’s Chief Green Hydrogen Officer, Mohammad Abdelqader El Ramahi, emphasised the significance of BP joining the consortium. “This partnership strengthens our existing relationship and aligns with Masdar’s goal to promote green hydrogen globally,” he said. “The agreement supports Egypt’s vast clean energy potential.”
Amr Allam, Co-CEO of Hassan Allam Holding, highlighted the consortium’s aim to make Egypt a key player in green hydrogen. “Our collaboration will drive economic growth and contribute to a greener future for Egypt,” he said.
Felipe Arbelaez, BP’s SVP Hydrogen and CCS, emphasised hydrogen’s potential role in future energy solutions. “We eagerly explore hydrogen’s potential in Egypt’s energy sector,” he said.
Infinity Power’s Chairman, Mohamed Ismail Mansour, and CEO, Nayer Fouad, stressed the importance of leveraging Africa’s renewable resources for hydrogen exports. “This project boosts Egypt’s leadership in green energy and brings economic and environmental benefits,” they said.
The project combines the partners’ existing green hydrogen initiatives in Egypt. It aims to create a single, multi-phase project to produce and export green hydrogen. This initiative supports Egypt’s transition to a green economy and helps decarbonise sectors globally dependent on fossil fuels.
