On Wednesday, July 10, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) announced a N115 billion programme to bolster Nigeria’s energy reform and transition to clean energy. This initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s commitment to stabilizing the power sector.
Strengthening the USAID-Nigeria Partnership
During a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony between USAID and the Federal Ministry of Power in Abuja, USAID’s Mission Director in Nigeria, Melisa Jones, emphasized the significance of the partnership. She said:
“USAID is thrilled to launch a new milestone in our partnership with the Ministry of Power. We aim to intensify and accelerate our collaboration through this MoU. The Ministry of Power, under your leadership, Honorable Minister, has done an incredible job laying out a five-point plan for us all.”
Jones further explained that the MoU aims to enhance cooperation between USAID and the Nigerian government while providing a framework for engaging other key stakeholders, including state actors.
Power Africa’s Commitment to Improved Electricity Access
Richard Nelson, Coordinator of Power Africa, highlighted the longstanding commitment to improving African electricity access. He noted that nearly 200 million people have gained access to electricity through Power Africa’s initiatives. Nelson reaffirmed Nigeria’s importance in Power Africa’s agenda, pledging continued support for the country’s journey towards better electricity access.
Federal Government’s Dedication to Energy Stability
In his address, Minister of Power Chief Adebayo Adelabu underscored the critical role of energy in national development and reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to stabilizing the power sector. He praised USAID for its support and highlighted the government’s dedication to ensuring transparency, improving market efficiency, and accelerating the transition to clean energy solutions. He said:
“Energy is fundamental to achieving our developmental goals. The President’s Development Group has prioritized energy as a key sector that drives the development of other sectors. Meaningful economic growth and industrial development depend on the energy sector’s stability. We have observed nations achieving significant progress in their local industries, first, stabilize their electricity sectors.”
The strengthened partnership between USAID and the Federal Ministry of Power, alongside continued commitments from Power Africa, underscores the collaborative efforts needed to stabilize and advance Nigeria’s power sector. As Nigeria strives for energy stability, these initiatives will be crucial in driving national development and improving electricity access for all.
