The federal government has unveiled the Nigeria Police Force Green Initiative, targeting 5,000 solar installations nationwide.
President Bola Tinubu stressed the link between climate change and security at the launch event in Abuja. “We welcome this initiative by the Nigeria Police Force because the connection between climate change and security is a price we have paid enough. Therefore, we will throw our weight behind its success,” he said. He highlighted the Carbon Market Activation Plan, aiming to create a $2.5 billion sustainable carbon market.
Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, outlined the initiative’s targets. These include 5,000 solar installations, 38 MW of solar power, 840 electric vehicles, and 1 million trees planted by 2030. The plan also covers hybrid gas/fuel motorcycles, electric vehicle charging stations, gas refill locations, and community engagement projects.
“The Nigeria Police Green Initiative (NPGI) aims to enhance our operational efficiency and capacity to maintain law and order through green solutions,” said IGP Egbetokun. The initiative will retrofit police facilities with renewable energy and incorporate electric and gas-conversion vehicles into the fleet.
President Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, emphasised the urgency of addressing climate change. “No part of the world can claim to live in denial of the realities of climate change today,” Tinubu remarked. “The consequences are everywhere, from unstable weather to water bodies and farm yields. This must spur each person and organisation to join in implementing solutions.”
Nigeria has committed to international climate goals, pledging at COP 28 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Climate Change Act 2021, Energy Transition Plan (ETP), and National Climate Change Policy (NCCP) drive Nigeria’s efforts to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060.
Tinubu announced the establishment of a Presidential Committee on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions. This committee will coordinate climate action and green economic development. “The Nigeria Police Green Initiative emphasises our bid to prioritise innovation and partnerships for the nation’s transition to a green economy,” he said.
The initiative, in collaboration with NEA Energies Limited, promotes renewable energy, environmental awareness, and green technology investments. It aims to foster local and international partnerships in green infrastructure across Nigeria.
The Nigeria Police Force Green Initiative marks a significant step towards addressing climate change and enhancing security. It boosts operational efficiency through sustainable practices and green technology. The federal government’s support underscores its commitment to a greener, more secure future for Nigeria.
