Dangote Cement Plc has announced a significant step towards adopting cleaner energy in Nigeria with plans to deploy 1,500 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) delivery trucks across its operations. Arvind Pathak, the Group Managing Director, disclosed this ambitious move during a virtual conference call for investors and analysts, emphasising the company’s ongoing transition from diesel-powered trucks to CNG.
Pathak highlighted that Dangote Cement embarked on this transition four years ago, with approximately 1,400 trucks already equipped with dual-fired engines. In the first half of 2024 alone, the company integrated 300 additional CNG-powered trucks into its fleet, marking substantial progress towards achieving its sustainability goals.
At their recent Annual General Meeting in Lagos, Aliko Dangote, Chairman of Dangote Cement, reiterated the company’s commitment to converting thousands more delivery trucks to CNG by 2025. This initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s objectives to reduce fossil fuel dependency and bolster national energy security.
President Bola Tinubu’s directive in April mandating government entities procure CNG-powered vehicles further supports Dangote Cement’s strategic shift towards cleaner energy. Pathak underscored that these efforts not only contribute to environmental sustainability but also help optimize operational costs amidst prevailing economic challenges.
The phased transition to CNG trucks underscores their proactive stance in promoting sustainable practices within the industry, reinforcing their commitment to long-term environmental stewardship and operational efficiency.
Dangote Cement remains dedicated to maintaining shareholder satisfaction through innovative business strategies, including fuel mix optimization and the use of alternative fuels. The phased transition to CNG trucks reflects their proactive approach to driving sustainable practices within the industry.
