- Governor Ademola Adeleke announced plans for Osun State to generate electricity and export power to neighbouring states during the inauguration of the Obokun 33KV feeder line.
- The long-abandoned Obokun feeder line project, expected to enhance electricity supply to several local government areas, is now under construction following renewed government commitment.
Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has announced a major initiative to enhance the state’s electricity supply during the inauguration of the Obokun 33KV feeder line construction in Ilesa on Thursday, August 29. The project will significantly improve power distribution within the state and mark a step towards Osun’s electricity generation goal.
Adeleke revealed that the state plans to generate and distribute electricity locally to neighbouring states once the infrastructure is fully operational. The governor emphasised the state’s commitment to transforming its energy sector through new policies and legislation. A draft electricity bill and policy are already being developed to expand power generation and distribution across Osun.
He stated, “As a government dedicated to the welfare of our people, our goal is to bring economic light to Osun. Once enacted, the new policy and bill will revolutionise our electricity landscape. We are determined to generate electricity, blessed with abundant rivers and solar resources. We will issue licenses to qualified entities and regulate our power distributor, Ibadan Disco.”
Adeleke underscored the critical role of reliable power supply in economic growth. “Regular power supply fuels economic activities, and our vision is for Osun to be self-sufficient in power and even export electricity to neighbouring states,” he added.
The governor also addressed the historical neglect of the Obokun feeder line project, which had been stalled for 11 years, causing significant hardship and economic loss to the affected communities. He assured that this era of darkness is over, declaring, “From today, light has returned, and darkness has vanished.”
Festus Adeyemo, Commissioner for Energy in Osun, provided additional details about the project. He noted that the Obokun feeder line repair contract was initially awarded on January 25, 2013, with 30% of the funding released. However, successive administrations later abandoned the project due to a lack of interest.
Once completed, the feeder line will supply electricity to communities in four local government areas: Ilesa West, Obokun, Boluwaduro, and Atakumosa West. This development is expected to improve residents’ quality of life and boost regional economic activities.
The inauguration of the Obokun 33KV feeder line construction marks a significant milestone in Osun’s energy sector and reflects the state’s commitment to improving power supply and economic growth.
