Governor Aiyedatiwa Launches ‘O’Datiwa Meters’ for Ondo State Electricity

  • Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has launched the “O’Datiwa Meters” program in Ondo State to eliminate inflated electricity bills and ensure fair billing for residents.
  • The initiative also marks Ondo State’s first implementation of a new power sector law, with regulatory oversight shifted to the State Electricity Regulatory Bureau (SERB).

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has launched a new mass metering initiative, “O’Datiwa Meters,” in Ondo State. This initiative aims to eliminate arbitrary and inflated electricity bills. It aligns with his commitment to reforming the power sector and simplifying electricity access for residents.

At the launch event in Akure, Governor Aiyedatiwa underscored the importance of accurate metering for a transparent and fair electricity billing system. He described the program as a pivotal move towards providing a reliable and equitable billing structure for every citizen.

The initiative involves subsidising meters to combat energy theft and inefficient billing practices. This ensures that residents only pay for the energy they use, that their payments are justly spent, and that they receive the energy they have paid for without disruptions.

Governor Aiyedatiwa also highlighted a recent shift in regulatory oversight from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to the State Electricity Regulatory Bureau (SERB). This change will enable the state to manage its electricity sector and tailor policies better to meet local needs.

Looking ahead, the governor announced plans for Ondo State to venture into power generation, transmission, and distribution. He urged distribution and generation companies to collaborate with the state to achieve these ambitious goals.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Energy, Engr. Johnson Alabi praised the initiative as a significant milestone in the state’s energy sector and promised enhanced consumer protection and fairness.

Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr. Rasaq Obe and Managing Director of BEDC, Deolu Ijose, also lauded the program, noting its importance in addressing frustrations over inflated bills and promoting accurate energy use.

Engr. Tunji Light-Ariyomo, Chairman of the Ondo State Electricity Regulatory Transition Committee, announced that Ondo is the first state in Nigeria to implement this power sector law, with Governor Aiyedatiwa being the first Nigerian governor to make such meters available to residents.

Beneficiaries like Mr. Olukayode Babatunde expressed gratitude for the program, believing it will improve living standards and foster business growth in the state.
