- Nigeria’s Minister of Power launched a new SCADA system to improve grid stability and sustainable power delivery.
- The project, backed by the World Bank and TCN, aims to enhance real-time monitoring and efficiency in the electricity sector.
The Minister of Power, Mr Adebayo Adelabu, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring grid stability for sustainable power delivery during the demonstration of the new Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system in Gwagwalada, Abuja.
Represented by Acting Permanent Secretary Mr. Emmanuel Nosike, Adelabu highlighted that the SCADA system signifies a technological upgrade and a dedication to enhancing Nigeria’s power supply’s efficiency, reliability, and sustainability.
He emphasised that the SCADA system would enable real-time monitoring and control, facilitating quick decision-making and effective grid management. This initiative is part of a broader government strategy to modernise power infrastructure and implement innovative grid technologies, creating an environment conducive to private sector investment and innovation in the energy market.
Adelabu stated that the SCADA system would allow for centralised monitoring of the electricity network, improving response times to outages and optimising overall performance. Features such as automated data collection, fault detection, and remote-controlled operations are designed to bolster the power sector’s resilience, aligning with the government’s vision for energy security and expanded electricity access.
He urged stakeholders in the power sector to leverage the new technology to enhance service delivery, aiming to transform the industry into a catalyst for national development and economic growth. The minister acknowledged the contributions of various partners, including the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the World Bank, and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
Mr. Bunu Bukar, the World Bank’s task team lead, expressed confidence that this project would successfully establish a functional SCADA system in Nigeria, emphasizing the bank’s commitment to supporting its completion within the agreed-upon timeframe.
Mr Sule Abdulaziz, Managing Director of TCN, noted that the project would revolutionise system operations within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI), enhancing operational efficiency with advanced grid monitoring and control equipment. He highlighted that the SCADA system would improve power quality and reliability, encouraging industries to connect to the grid and ultimately increasing revenue.
The project also promises transparency in market operations, reduced transmission losses, and fewer power outages, contributing to significant savings and increased power consumption. Abdulaziz called for the support of key stakeholders to ensure the successful extension and completion of the Nigerian Electricity Transmission Access Project (NETAP).
