France’s Largest Rooftop Solar Plant Goes into Operation

  • A new Axpo solar power plant has gone into operation in the northern French town of Beauvais.
  • Urbasolar has already built over 700 large-scale solar plants, including roof installations, open spaces, greenhouses, and agri-voltaics in agriculture.

The Swiss electricity company Axpoannounced on September 23 that a new Axpo solar power plant has been put into operation in the northern French town of Beauvais. It is the largest rooftop solar power plant in France.

The solar plant of Axpo subsidiary Urbasolar is located in Beauvais, around 80 kilometres north of Paris, and was installed on an industrial roof. With an area of 6.2 hectares and an installed capacity of 12.8 megawatts peak, it is the largest plant of its kind in France.

According to Axpo, the annual production of 13 gigawatt hours of electricity corresponds to the annual electricity consumption of around 3000 French households. Such large-scale plants contribute to the energy transition and security of supply in Europe.

Urbasolar has already built more than 700 large-scale solar plants, including roof installations, open spaces, greenhouses, agri-voltaics in agriculture, and floating on water surfaces. In April, an even larger system was implemented at Disneyland Paris: Twenty hectares of parking lot were covered with solar panels, which provide 36 gigawatt hours of green electricity per year.

Before now, Axpo signed a cooperation agreement in April with French energy investor ENEGO to study the feasibility of a 100-MW green H2 plant in Sicily. The project shall be located in the Priolo-Augusta industrial complex on the island’s east coast.

Also, contributing to the creation of a so-called H2 valley running between Catania and Siracusa, the new plant would help meet the demand for green from industries in the surrounding area. For Axpo, this is a further step in its strategy of actively developing the green H2 economy in Switzerland and Europe.
