- The Enugu State Government is set to introduce Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to enhance environmental sustainability and reduce transportation costs for citizens.
- A new Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has been established to oversee investments in the energy sector and support the development of CNG infrastructure, including a significant mother station at Ugwu Onyeama.
The Enugu State Government is taking significant steps to introduce Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to promote environmental sustainability and make transportation more affordable for residents. Additionally, the state has established a new Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources to oversee and stimulate investments in these sectors.
This announcement was made by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, and the Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Obi Ozor, following a recent meeting of the State Executive Council.
Prof. Onyia highlighted that the governor previously signed the Enugu State Electricity Law, which mandates the creation of an independent regulatory body and a supervising ministry to manage the state’s energy and mineral resources. He emphasised that the newly established ministry would facilitate investment opportunities in the solid mineral and energy sectors, given Enugu’s rich mineral resources.
Dr Ozor elaborated on the introduction of CNG buses, explaining that the government is also developing the necessary infrastructure to ensure a safe and efficient operation for commuters. He noted that the transition from petrol to CNG will cut transportation costs in half, benefiting the citizens significantly.
The plans include constructing bus terminals, enhancing bus shelters, and integrating advanced technology to track buses and ensure passenger safety. The state is also fostering an investment-friendly environment in the CNG sector, and it is already partnering with Greenville Energy to advance these initiatives.
Dr. Ozor confirmed that construction is underway for a major CNG mother station at Ugwu Onyeama, serving the entire Southeast region. Work on smaller daughter stations, similar to filling stations, will also begin in the coming weeks.
