OMV Petrom, Southeastern Europe’s largest energy producer, has strengthened its renewable energy portfolio by acquiring 50% of Electrocentrale Borzești shares and production assets from Renovatio Group. These acquisitions boost OMV Petrom’s renewable capacity by 1,018 MW.
In the first transaction, OMV Petrom bought a 50% stake in Electrocentrale Borzești from RNV Infrastructure, securing 950 MW of wind energy and 50 MW of solar projects. The wind farms will begin operations between 2025 and 2027, while the photovoltaic plant currently undergoes production testing.
In the second deal, OMV Petrom acquired 18 MW of operational renewable assets from Renovatio. These assets include two 16-MW wind farms in eastern Romania and a 2 MW micro-hydropower plant in the northwest. Together, these assets will generate around 45 GWh of electricity annually, supplying clean energy to the national grid.
Franck Neel, OMV Petrom’s Executive Board Member for Gas and Power, emphasised the strategic importance of these acquisitions. “These deals reflect our commitment to expanding our green energy production. OMV Petrom now actively contributes as a renewable energy producer,” Neel said.
Renovatio CEO Aurel Arion expressed satisfaction with the partnership. “This collaboration with OMV Petrom underscores our confidence in Romania’s renewable energy potential,” Arion stated.
The Competition Authority and the Commission approved both transactions for the Examination of Foreign Investments. Once fully operational, OMV Petrom expects these projects to generate 1.4 TWh annually, further establishing its leadership in renewable energy in the region.
The operational wind farms and hydropower plant will help meet Romania’s growing demand for clean electricity. These projects align with OMV Petrom’s strategy to support the global energy transition by expanding renewable capacity, reducing carbon emissions, and contributing to a sustainable future in Southeastern Europe.
OMV Petrom’s focus on wind and solar power highlights its effort to shift away from fossil fuels, positioning the company as a significant player in Romania’s renewable energy sector. The wind and solar projects, developed with RNV Infrastructure, are located in northeastern Romania and will soon begin contributing to the country’s clean energy goals.
These acquisitions mark a significant milestone in OMV Petrom’s push towards greener energy. The company strengthens its role in Southeastern Europe’s clean energy market by increasing its renewable output. Once fully operational, these projects will further cement OMV Petrom’s position as a leader in the region’s renewable energy space, contributing to Romania’s transition to a more sustainable energy future.
