- A 15,000-litre capacity facility, JUHI-2, was commissioned at MMIA to ensure a steady aviation fuel supply.
- The depot can load four fuel bowsers simultaneously, cutting delivery turnaround time to 25 minutes.
- JUHI-2 creates jobs and strengthens Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure, supporting airlines and private operators.
A consortium of energy companies, including Eterna PLC, Masters Energy, Techno Oil, Quest Oil, Rahamaniyya, Ibafon Oil, and First Deep Water Limited, commissioned Nigeria’s largest airside jet fuel depot at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.
The Joint User Hydrant Installation 2 (JUHI-2) facility covers 46,000 square meters and stores 15,000 litres of jet fuel. It strategically ensures a steady aviation fuel supply to MMIA’s terminals MMA1 and MMA2 and nearby airbases.
During the commissioning ceremony, JUHI-2 Board Chairman Mrs Patience Dappa emphasised the depot’s significance to Nigeria’s aviation sector. “JUHI-2 goes beyond size. It stands for operational excellence, safety, and reliability,” she said. The depot includes advanced filtration systems, a modern jet fuel discharge setup, an on-site laboratory, and cutting-edge fire prevention measures.
Dappa highlighted the project’s job creation potential, noting that it will directly and indirectly boost employment and reduce unemployment in the region. She explained that the facility will serve airlines, cargo carriers, and private jet operators, minimising delays and enhancing efficiency. “We feel not just planes but the future of Nigeria’s aviation industry,” she added.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, praised the project’s strategic value. “This facility addresses critical challenges in the aviation ecosystem, such as flight delays and cancellations caused by fuel shortages,” he stated.
Keyamo also noted the depot’s compliance with international aviation standards, especially for hajj operations and global flight services. “This facility puts Nigeria on the map globally by meeting these essential requirements,” he added.
Eterna Oil Plc Managing Director Mr. Abiola Lawal highlighted the depot’s high-efficiency capabilities. He explained that JUHI-2 can load four fuel bowsers simultaneously, ensuring quick delivery. “The average turnaround time for each truck will be around 25 minutes, supporting high-volume, high-frequency fuel handling,” Lawal said. He also stressed JUHI-2’s commitment to safety, citing its modern filtration and fire prevention systems.
The JUHI-2 project strengthens Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure, transforming MMIA into a critical hub for efficient fuel services. With its advanced technology and high capacity, the facility supports the country’s growing aviation sector.
By enhancing fuel supply and reducing delays, JUHI-2 significantly contributes to operational efficiency in Nigerian aviation. This investment not only meets today’s demands but also fuels the future of the nation’s role in global air transport.
