- Plenitude expects this solar plant in Salamanca to produce 400GWh of electricity annually by 2025, aiming for 8GW of capacity and 40,000 EV charging points by 2027.
- The project features 365,300 bifacial panels across 286 hectares, with environmental protections in place and support from local farmers.
Plenitude has begun constructing a 220-megawatt (MW) solar plant in Villarino de los Aires, Salamanca, Spain. This project, one of the largest in Castilla y León, will generate over 400 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity each year.
The plant spans 286 hectares and connects to the national grid through a 3.2-kilometre underground line at the Villarino de los Aires junction. It features 365,300 bifacial solar panels that maximise energy capture. Sterling & Wilson, a global leader in solar construction, leads the project with the help of local firms. Plenitude plans to finish the plant by 2025.
Plenitude implements several protective measures to reduce environmental impact. The company relocates rural huts, preserves natural water channels, and installs permeable fences around the site. In addition, the firm collaborates with local farmers to ensure the project fits existing land use.
During the cornerstone-laying ceremony, Mariangiola Mollicone, Head of Western Europe Renewables and Managing Director of Plenitude in Spain, highlighted the importance of working closely with the community. “The Villarino project shows how we integrate with local communities. Today’s gathering reflects our dedication to this approach, which drives our growth strategy in Spain,” she said.
Plenitude continues to expand its presence in Castilla y León, where it already operates a 13MW wind plant. Across Spain, the company manages over 440MW of renewable energy, with installations in regions like Galicia, La Rioja, Catalonia, Castilla-La Mancha, and Murcia. The firm is also developing 1GW of solar capacity in Andalusia, Castilla y León, and Extremadura, with another 2GW of projects in progress.
Plenitude is part of the Eni group and operates in over 15 countries. The company controls over 3GW of renewable energy and provides energy solutions to 10 million European customers. It also manages 20,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging points. By 2027, Plenitude aims to increase its renewable capacity to 8GW, expand its customer base to 11.5 million, and operate 40,000 EV charging points.
The Villarino de los Aires solar plant aligns with Plenitude’s goal of boosting renewable energy production in Spain. By investing in large-scale solar projects, the company contributes to Spain’s energy transition and helps cut greenhouse gas emissions.
Plenitude continues exploring new technologies and partnerships to improve energy efficiency. Its focus on innovation and solid local alliances strengthen its role as a leader in the renewable energy industry.
This project solidifies Plenitude’s role in the global shift to clean energy. The Villarino solar plant marks another milestone in its mission to expand its renewable portfolio and support Europe’s sustainability goals.
