Namibia Pioneers Solar Innovation with Merchant Model Plant

Namibia has significantly advanced in renewable energy with the launch of a 20 MW solar photovoltaic plant by Solarcentury Africa and Sino Energy. This project uses a direct electricity sales model without long-term purchase agreements (PPAs) or sovereign guarantees. This choice challenges the norm in a region that often depends on state support.

Traditionally, hydropower and coal dominate the Southern African energy mix. However, recurring droughts complicate hydropower production. Additionally, pressure to reduce carbon emissions leads governments to diversify energy sources and limit coal usage, a major polluter.

The Solarcentury Africa plant addresses these energy supply gaps by providing a stable energy source. Unlike hydropower, this solar plant remains unaffected by climatic challenges. It also aligns with regional environmental commitments, marking a shift toward sustainable energy solutions.

Solarcentury Africa and Sino Energy provide financial support for the project, with GreenCo offering additional backing. GreenCo specialises in energy contract aggregation and negotiation. Working with the US Development Finance Corporation (DFC), it aims to boost energy market resilience in Southern Africa by promoting renewable projects that do not rely on state guarantees.

This solar plant introduces flexible renewable energy distribution by selling electricity directly to the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP). This merchant model decreases reliance on traditional PPAs. It also allows investors to diversify their revenue streams and reduce risks associated with state consumers.

The connection to the SAPP enhances Namibia’s energy resilience and strengthens the region’s capacity to respond to demand fluctuations. This solar project’s fully merchant model opens opportunities for similar initiatives in the renewable energy sector.
