- Hydro-Québec will launch two 300 MW solar energy tenders to support Quebec’s 2050 carbon neutrality goal.
- The first 150 MW tender will begin in late 2024, with the remaining 150 MW set for grid connection by 2029.
- Solar energy will complement wind power to ensure a stable, year-round electricity supply, modernising Quebec’s energy infrastructure.
Hydro-Québec will launch two tenders for 300 megawatts (MW) of solar energy to diversify its energy mix and support Quebec’s 2050 carbon neutrality target. Minister of Economy, Innovation, and Energy Christine Fréchette announced this initiative, which drives Quebec’s energy transition.
The first tender will arrive by the end of 2024 and aim for 150 MW of solar energy. Hydro-Québec plans the second tender, which will cover the remaining 150 MW, to connect to the grid by the end of 2029. These projects will complement Quebec’s existing wind energy resources, balancing the energy system to meet seasonal demands.
Quebec will use solar energy, which remains underutilised in the province, to stabilise electricity generation year-round. Wind turbines generate more energy in the winter, while solar panels peak in summer, ensuring a consistent power supply.
Quebec aims to double Hydro-Québec’s electricity production by 2050, reducing its reliance on fossil fuels. This solar energy push will also lower energy costs for consumers and businesses, strengthening Quebec’s position in the renewable energy market.
The additional solar capacity addresses the rising demand for electricity in Quebec, driven by the province’s increasing number of businesses and industries. Guaranteeing a stable power supply for new enterprises will help attract foreign investments.
Hydro-Québec will collaborate with local and international solar energy companies to develop the new infrastructure quickly. These partnerships will streamline the integration of solar power into Quebec’s existing energy grid, avoiding delays and disruptions.
The tenders will tackle immediate electricity needs while securing long-term energy solutions for Quebec. Hydro-Québec will modernise the grid by expanding solar energy, creating a more resilient system that can adapt to seasonal changes in demand.
With this shift toward solar energy, Hydro-Québec is a leader in North America’s energy transition. This move aligns with its role as a clean energy provider and supports Quebec’s goal of becoming a carbon-neutral province by 2050.
In addition to meeting Quebec’s energy demands, this solar project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to the global fight against climate change. Hydro-Québec’s efforts will foster a more sustainable energy future for Quebec while enhancing the province’s reputation as a clean energy innovator.
By taking this bold step, Hydro-Québec strengthens its commitment to renewable energy, ensuring that Quebec remains a frontrunner in the global energy transition.
