- Nigeria is launching local electric vehicle manufacturing in partnership with Morocco’s E-move Vehicles Company.
- The initiative aims to boost local production and job creation while meeting global quality standards.
The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), is set to launch local manufacturing and assembly of electric vehicles (EVs). NADDC Director-General Joseph Osanipin announced this initiative following his recent participation in the Nigeria-Morocco Business Forum, where he explored potential collaborations in the automotive sector.
Osanipin revealed that discussions are underway with Morocco’s E-move Vehicles Company, known for producing electric motorcycles, tricycles, and energy storage systems. He expressed a desire for E-move to establish manufacturing operations in Nigeria, emphasising that their expertise aligns with Nigeria’s goals for local production and energy transition in mobility.
The NADDC also visited Univers Acier Steel, a Moroccan firm supplying components to automotive companies, as part of its strategy to enhance EV production partnerships. Osanipin noted that these collaborations would strengthen local manufacturing capabilities, create jobs, and contribute to sustainable economic growth.
Additionally, the NADDC delegation toured Morocco’s National Center for Homologation and various test centres, gaining insights into the country’s rigorous standards for automotive parts, inspections, and testing. This experience is expected to inform Nigeria’s own standards and practices in the automotive industry.
Osanipin emphasised that this partnership significantly reduces Nigeria’s reliance on imports and promotes local expertise. He mentioned plans to manufacture domestic automotive parts for export to Morocco and other markets.
“The partnership presents opportunities for Nigeria to enhance its electric vehicle production capabilities while adhering to global quality and safety standards,” he said, highlighting NADDC’s commitment to turning these discussions into concrete developments that will transform Nigeria’s automotive landscape.
