- Nigeria has launched the computerised National Energy Information System (NEIS) to improve data collection and support energy transition.
- The new system will provide reliable, timely data for better energy planning, policy-making, and decision-making across sectors.
Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, has emphasised the need for accurate, reliable, and timely energy data to drive the country’s energy transition. At the official launch of the computerised National Energy Information System (NEIS) at the ECOWAS headquarters in Abuja, Nnaji stressed that such data is essential for adequate energy planning and policy-making.
“The Energy Commission of Nigeria recognises the importance of improving energy data collection to address the country’s growing needs across all sectors,” Nnaji said. “Through the collaboration between the Energy Commission and the ECOWAS Commission, we can now enhance energy programming, improve government efforts in planning and policy-making, and ensure informed decision-making for transforming Nigeria’s energy sector.”
The Minister highlighted that the transition to clean energy requires a holistic approach, with high-quality and reliable data informing project designs, policies, and strategies. The NEIS, he explained, aims to modernise energy data collection by reducing errors and processing time, improving data dissemination speed, and ensuring better data quality. “This system ushers in a new era of efficient data collection, harmonisation, validation, and dissemination,” he added.
Dr. Abdullahi Mustapha, Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), also addressed the gathering, outlining the commission’s role in coordinating national energy policies and strategic planning. “The ECN is tasked with collecting, analysing, and publishing energy data from various sources for informed energy planning,” Mustapha said.
“The newly established National Energy Information System will serve as a repository for reliable energy data, which can be accessed by researchers, development partners, organisations, and individuals for effective decision-making in energy management.”
The NEIS is expected to support energy sector stakeholders by providing a comprehensive and accessible data platform to drive Nigeria’s energy transformation and ensure sustainable energy planning and development.
