- President Bola Tinubu will attend the G20 Summit in Brazil, which will focus on sustainable energy transition and global climate goals.
- Nigeria aims to advance its energy sector reforms and advocate for a more equitable global governance system during the summit.
President Bola Tinubu will depart Abuja for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Sunday to attend the 19th G20 Leaders’ Summit, set to take place from November 18 to 19, 2024. The Summit, convened at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, will bring together heads of state from the world’s top 20 economies and leaders from the European Union, the African Union, and significant multilateral financial institutions.
This year’s Summit is centred around the theme “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet,” focusing on addressing global challenges such as hunger, poverty, and climate change. The critical transition to sustainable energy systems is among the key issues on the agenda. This subject is vital to Nigeria as it seeks to diversify its energy sector, address local energy needs, and its commitments to global climate goals.
As part of Nigeria’s ongoing advocacy for a just and sustainable energy future, President Tinubu is expected to engage with other world leaders on the importance of collaborative efforts for energy transition, particularly in developing economies. Nigeria, an energy-producing country with a large population, has a significant role in global discussions on energy access, renewable energy investments, and modernising energy infrastructure.
In addition to the broader discussions on sustainable energy, the Summit will also address the reform of global governance institutions, an issue Nigeria has long championed. The country seeks more equitable representation in global decision-making bodies such as the United Nations Security Council.
During his visit, President Tinubu will also hold bilateral meetings with fellow leaders and critical stakeholders on the sidelines of the Summit. These discussions will focus on advancing Nigeria’s socio-economic reforms, including energy sector modernisation, rural electrification, and increasing investment in clean energy technologies.
The President will be accompanied by a high-level delegation, including Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs; Idi Maiha, Minister of Livestock Development; Hanatu Musawa, Minister of Arts, Tourism, Culture and Creativity; Sabi Abdullahi, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security; and Mohammed Mohamed, Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency.
To drive sustainable development, Nigeria must prioritize energy sector reforms, invest in renewable energy, and improve global governance participation. Strengthening infrastructure, expanding energy access, and enhancing international partnerships are crucial for the country’s long-term socio-economic growth.
