Russian coal exports from the Rostov region have increased by more than 50 per cent during the first nine months of this year, reaching over 1.16 million tons, driven by rising exports to North African countries, particularly Morocco, as well as other Southeast Asian nations and Turkey, according to a statement from the regional government of Rostov.
Also, the same source quoted Igor Sorokin, the deputy governor of the region, as saying that “coal mining companies in Rostov have seen significant growth in exports this year, thanks to effective cooperation and the redirection of sales towards North African countries, primarily Morocco, Algeria, and Egypt, as well as certain Southeast Asian countries, particularly India and Thailand, along with increased supplies to Turkey.”
Sorokin also explained that the “Ministry of Industry and Energy has made proposals to the federal authorities to exclude coal from the list of goods subject to export duties and to improve the efficiency of rail transport within the Russian energy strategy until 2050.”
Morocco is one of the world’s largest coal importers and consumers. The country’s continued reliance on coal raises key questions about the country’s national energy efficiency strategy, which aims to increase the share of renewable energy in the electricity mix to 52 per cent by 2030 and reduce reliance on coal for electricity generation.
