Jeonnam 1 Powers Up South Korea’s Offshore Wind Breakthrough

  • Jeonnam 1, South Korea’s first commercial-scale offshore wind farm, has delivered its first power and aims to be entirely commercial by early 2025, powering 60,000 homes annually.
  • The project is a 51/49 joint venture between Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and SK E&S, developed by CIP’s Copenhagen Infrastructure III fund and Copenhagen Offshore Partners (COP).
  • Jeonnam 1 supports South Korea’s goal to boost renewable energy to 20% of electricity generation by 2030, with offshore wind as a critical part of the plan.

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has marked a significant milestone as the Jeonnam 1 offshore wind farm delivers its first power. Situated off the coast of Shinan County in Jeonnam Province, Jeonnam 1 stands as South Korea’s first commercial-scale offshore wind farm.

Construction crews began working on Jeonnam 1 in early 2023, with turbine installation in September 2024. The wind farm aims to achieve commercial operation by the first quarter 2025. Once fully operational, it will generate enough electricity to power about 60,000 homes annually.

Jeonnam 1 operates as a joint venture between CIP and South Korean firm SK E&S. CIP holds a 51% stake, while SK E&S controls 49%. The project’s development involved collaboration between CIP’s Copenhagen Infrastructure III fund, its exclusive partner Copenhagen Offshore Partners (COP), and SK E&S.

CIP entered the South Korean market in 2018 and expanded its offshore wind portfolio. Currently, the company has around 5 GW of offshore wind projects in development across South Korea.

Jeonnam 1 is critical to advancing South Korea’s renewable energy goals. By ramping up renewable energy production, the country aims to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels. Offshore wind is a central element in this strategy.

CIP and its partners have been pivotal in pushing South Korea’s offshore wind industry forward. The Jeonnam 1 project is crucial to South Korea’s efforts to build a sustainable energy future. When fully operational, the wind farm will provide thousands of homes with cleaner and more reliable energy.

Beyond energy production, the project has spurred job creation and economic growth in the Jeonnam region. Local industries and communities stand to benefit from ongoing operations and future offshore wind developments.

South Korea has set ambitious renewable energy targets, aiming for renewables to account for 20% of its total electricity generation by 2030. Offshore wind will play a significant role in reaching this goal. CIP’s investment strategy aligns with the country’s renewable energy ambitions.

Jeonnam 1 also reflects a growing global push toward offshore wind energy. Countries worldwide are increasing their renewable energy capacities to address climate change. Offshore wind farms like Jeonnam 1 offer scalable solutions for nations with access to coastal areas and vital wind resources.

With the success of Jeonnam 1, CIP continues to strengthen its position as a global leader in offshore wind development. The company actively expands its presence in key regions, including Europe, North America, and Asia. CIP’s experience and expertise drive the successful development of large-scale wind projects like Jeonnam 1.

As Jeonnam 1 approaches its entire commercial operation in 2025, it sets an example for future offshore wind projects in South Korea and beyond. With a robust pipeline of projects, CIP stands ready to support South Korea’s transition to renewable energy and its global efforts to combat climate change.
