Fidra Energy and Sungrow Unveil 4.4 GWh UK Battery Projects

Fidra Energy and Sungrow have partnered strategically to develop two large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in the UK. These projects will deliver a capacity of 4.4 GWh, advancing Fidra’s goal to build a 10 GW energy storage platform across Europe by 2030.

The first project will rise at Thorpe Marsh in South Yorkshire, becoming one of the world’s largest battery storage sites. It will power up to 800,000 homes during peak periods. Fidra plans to begin construction in 2025. The second project at West Burton C in Nottinghamshire will supply energy to 300,000 homes. Fidra intends to start building this facility in 2026.

Sungrow will provide its PowerTitan 2.0 storage system for both projects. This liquid-cooled solution delivers an initial two-hour energy storage duration, expandable to four hours. Sungrow will maintain the systems under a long-term contract, ensuring smooth operations over time.

Chris Elder, CEO of Fidra Energy, highlighted that the projects align with the company’s mission to deploy large-scale energy storage and support Europe’s clean energy transition. James Wu, Senior Vice President of Sungrow, emphasised the critical role of PowerTitan 2.0 technology in stabilising the UK’s power grid.

Both projects aim to balance the grid during peak demand and integrate renewable energy sources. Fidra expects Thorpe Marsh to set a new benchmark for large-scale energy storage, significantly enhancing the UK’s clean energy capabilities.

Through this partnership, Fidra and Sungrow will strengthen their positions in the European energy storage market while advancing the UK’s path toward carbon neutrality. The Thorpe Marsh facility will provide critical infrastructure to manage the country’s power needs and address fluctuations in electricity demand. It will also boost the UK’s ability to handle its grid’s growing share of renewable energy.

West Burton C will further add capacity to the UK’s energy storage infrastructure. Managing renewables’ variability will deliver stable power during peak periods, enhancing grid reliability.

This partnership marks a significant milestone for both Fidra and Sungrow as they seek to drive innovation in energy storage. Sungrow’s cutting-edge PowerTitan technology will enable the UK to meet rising energy demands while ensuring grid stability.
