Minister of Environment Balarabe Lawal made this announcement on the sidelines of the conference, highlighting the country’s proactive stance in addressing global climate challenges.
This year’s summit, now in its second week, has seen high-level discussions focused on securing critical deals to advance global climate action. Delegates from various countries are working to ensure that limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius remains achievable. As part of these discussions, Nigeria’s representatives have emphasised the country’s growing commitment to adopting cleaner, greener energy solutions.
One of the central issues raised by Nigerian officials is the country’s heavy reliance on off-grid energy solutions, with nearly 70 per cent of the population depending on them to meet their energy needs. As part of this initiative, Nigeria aims to increase its total power generation capacity to 30 gigawatts by 2030, with a substantial portion of this target being met through renewable resources.
