Greece Powers Up with GR-eco Islands Initiative

  • Greece’s GR-eco Islands program aims to transform islands into energy-independent models using renewable energy.
  • Key focus areas include solar and wind power, sustainable tourism, and intelligent technologies for resource management.
  • Pilot projects on islands like Chalki, Astypalea, and Poros have already reduced emissions and energy costs for residents.

The Greek government launched the GR-eco Islands program in 2021 to transform its islands into energy autonomy and sustainability models. The initiative supports Greece’s push for carbon neutrality by 2050 and aims to fight climate change.

With a €2 billion budget from the Greek state, the European Union, and the European Investment Bank (EIB), the program cuts reliance on oil-fired power plants, lowering energy costs and emissions. It focuses on building renewable energy systems to create a cleaner, self-sufficient energy supply for the islands.

The program sets four key goals:

  1. Energy Transition: Build solar and wind power to replace fossil fuels.
  2. Energy Autonomy: Enable islands to produce and manage their energy, reducing reliance on the mainland grid.
  3. Green Economy: Promote sustainability in tourism and agriculture.
  4. Digital Innovation: Use intelligent technologies to improve resource management and public services.

Several islands have already begun implementing the first phase:

  • Chalki: The island now operates a 1 MWp solar power plant that meets local energy needs. It also added electric vehicles and intelligent street lighting.
  • Astypalea: In partnership with Volkswagen, the island introduced electric vehicles and charging stations, promoting sustainable mobility.
  • Poros: Plans include solar panel installations, electric boats, and better waste management.

These projects have reduced emissions and energy costs for residents. Greece reviews each project carefully to ensure transparency and effective use of funds.

By turning these islands into sustainability models, Greece aims to cut emissions, lower energy costs, and boost local economies, contributing to global efforts to fight climate change.
