- The Katsina State Government plans to revive the 10MW Wind Farm in Lambar Rimi, which has been non-functional for nearly 20 years, to boost local power supply.
- The state also plans to build a 10MW Solar Farm, providing clean energy to power 4,400 homes, as part of its vision to become a renewable energy hub in Nigeria.
The Katsina State Government has announced plans to revive the 10MW Wind Farm in Lambar Rimi, which has been non-operational for nearly two decades, as part of efforts to improve the state’s power supply. Governor Malam Dikko Umaru Radda shared the news during a meeting with Vergnet Groupe, the wind farm’s Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), in Paris, France.
Governor Radda, who the Special Adviser accompanied on Power and Energy, Dr Hafiz Ibrahim Ahmed, emphasised the importance of rehabilitating the wind farm to meet the state’s growing energy needs. He expressed the government’s commitment to working closely with Vergnet Groupe to restore the wind farm’s operational capacity and ensure its sustainability for the long term.
The wind farm, located in Lambar Rimi, was initially established with the potential to provide significant renewable energy to the region but has been inactive for many years due to various challenges. The restoration project is expected to breathe new life into the facility and provide much-needed electricity to support economic growth and development in Katsina State.
Governor Radda highlighted that the wind farm would play a crucial role in the region’s energy infrastructure and align with Nigeria’s Renewable Energy Master Plan, which aims to increase the country’s renewable energy sources. He also underscored the importance of renewable energy in Nigeria’s broader commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2060. By rehabilitating the wind farm, the state hopes to contribute to this national goal while addressing the population’s local energy challenges.
In addition to the wind farm rehabilitation, Governor Radda revealed plans to establish a 10MW Solar Farm as a complementary project to the wind farm. The solar farm will provide clean, renewable energy to power approximately 4,400 homes across the state, further expanding the state’s renewable energy capacity. The combination of wind and solar energy projects is expected to provide a reliable and sustainable energy solution for Katsina, reducing its reliance on traditional power sources and promoting cleaner alternatives.
These initiatives are part of the Katsina State Government’s broader vision to position the state as a leading renewable energy hub in Nigeria. Governor Radda emphasised that these projects are essential to meeting the state’s energy demands and contributing to the country’s transition to a more sustainable energy future. With Vergnet Groupe’s and other stakeholders’ support, Katsina aims to become a model for renewable energy development in Nigeria.
