Côte d’Ivoire strengthens its renewable energy push with a €15 million partnership from the European Union (EU). On November 27, 2024, the Ministry of Finance and Budget signed the agreement to support the Green Energy Production Support Project (PAPEV). This initiative aligns with the country’s target of achieving 45% renewable energy in its electricity mix by 2030.
Thermal power plants dominate Côte d’Ivoire’s energy sector, contributing 75.82% of electricity production, while hydroelectric facilities provide 23.98%. PAPEV focuses on diversifying energy sources, targeting solar, wind, and biomass. The project also aims to improve electricity access in rural areas, promoting energy equity nationwide.
This €15 million investment forms part of a broader €112 million package covering several sectors. Of this amount, €50 million supports “inclusive and sustainable growth.” The EU’s investment emphasises its commitment to promoting Côte d’Ivoire’s sustainable development.
Electricity production in Côte d’Ivoire has surged from 7,125 GWh in 2018 to 13,345 GWh in 2023.
