ITAIPU Hydroelectric Power Plant Supplied 20,383 GWh of Electricity

  • The ITAIPU Hydroelectric Power Plant supplied Paraguay, through the National Electricity Administration (ANDE), with 20,383 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity.
  • These achievements are possible thanks to operational and maintenance efficiency, the technical quality of the staff and the coordinated work between the electrical systems of Paraguay and Brazil.

The ITAIPU Hydroelectric Power Plant supplied Paraguay, through the National Electricity Administration (ANDE), with 20,383 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity from January to December 2024. This represents an increase of 4.5 per cent compared to the supply in 2023 and translates into a new record of accumulated energy supply for ANDE. This is indicated in the monthly report on energy production and supply provided by the Technical Directorate of the Right Bank of the Entity.

The generation for the month of December was 7,464 GWh. Of this value, 3,811 GWh were generated by the 50 Hz system, of which 1,806 GWh were supplied to ANDE to meet Paraguayan energy consumption.

The total production of the Hydroelectric Power Plant last year reached 67,088 GWh, an amount equivalent to what is needed to supply Paraguay‘s demand for approximately three years. The report highlights the high availability rate of ITAIPU’s generating units, whose value in December was 97.28 per cent, exceeding the company’s goal of 94 per cent by 3.28 per cent.

These achievements are possible thanks to operational and maintenance efficiency, the technical quality of the staff, and the coordinated work between the electrical systems of Paraguay and Brazil, which optimises the available resources to cover the existing demand by the interconnected system.

ITAIPU is the largest generator of clean and renewable energy, with a production of more than 3,051,799 GWh since the start of its operations in 1984. Precisely, in 2024, the Entity was awarded the WORLD GUINNESS RECORDS achievement in the category “Largest accumulated production of hydroelectric energy”.

This is a historic milestone that no other hydroelectric plant in the world has achieved. This new milestone for the binational enterprise, a world leader in the generation of clean and renewable energy, reinforces the strategic importance of ITAIPU for the sustainable development and energy security of Paraguay and Brazil.
