  • Philomena Owusu-Ansah urges Ghana to reduce reliance on hydro and thermal energy, focusing on expanding solar power.
  • Prefos Limited plans to present solar energy proposals to the incoming government to improve the country’s energy mix.
  • Owusu-Ansah emphasises the importance of technical training for youth to combat unemployment and support national development.

Philomena Owusu-Ansah, General Manager of Prefos Limited, called for a shift in Ghana’s energy strategy. She urged the country to reduce its reliance on hydro and thermal power and focus more on solar energy. Owusu-Ansah commented during the company’s annual thanksgiving service at Adako-Jachie in the Ejisu Municipality.

She explained that Ghana has abundant sunlight that can generate power. Solar energy, she noted, remains available year-round, making it a reliable and sustainable option. “We can store sunlight and convert it into energy for industrial and domestic use,” she said.

Prefos Limited, a leading electrical engineering company in Kumasi, is committed to supporting the government’s efforts to expand solar power in the country. Owusu-Ansah revealed that the company plans to present solar power proposals to the incoming government. These proposals aim to improve the solar energy mix and reduce dependence on hydropower.

“Our goal is to increase solar power production, install more solar panels, and make them available for commercial and residential use,” she said. “Solar energy is the way forward for sustainable development in Ghana.”

She added that a stable power supply drives the country’s growth. Prefos stands ready to help enhance lighting systems across the nation. The company works on assembling, installing, and maintaining street lights, and Owusu-Ansah emphasised its commitment to doing more.

Owusu-Ansah also stressed the importance of skills training for the youth. She urged the government to invest in technical and vocational training institutions. She said these institutions can equip the youth with skills to reduce unemployment. She pointed out that many Prefos workers received training from the company.

“Prefos has trained its employees, especially those who work on street lights. This training has been instrumental in improving their skills,” she added. “We believe in empowering the youth to help drive the country’s development.”

Owusu-Ansah highlighted the company’s broader vision to support Africa’s industrialisation. Prefos aims to provide high-quality electrical installation and civil engineering services across the continent. She said the company remains committed to contributing to Africa’s development by offering modern and durable solutions.

The Thanksgiving service also served as a moment of reflection for Prefos. The event featured gospel music performances from well-known Ghanaian artists and preachers. The company used this occasion to thank God for the past year and set its intentions for the year ahead.

“We are grateful for the opportunities we’ve had to serve our country,” Owusu-Ansah said. “As we look forward to the new year, we remain committed to supporting Ghana’s energy sector and sustainable infrastructure development.”

The annual event concluded with a prayer session, where company employees and guests prayed for continued success in the coming year. Owusu-Ansah’s call for more solar energy development resonated with the audience, who supported the company’s vision of a sustainable energy future for Ghana.
