- Morocco is positioning itself as a key actor in implementing the Water-Energy-Food Security-Ecosystems nexus and building a more resilient and sustainable future.
- Improving water use efficiency, increasing the share of renewable energies in the energy mix and promoting sustainable food systems are key steps towards building a future resilient to climate impacts.
By combining its expertise in renewables and desalination with integrated agricultural strategies Morocco is positioning itself as a key actor in implementing the Water-Energy-Food Security-Ecosystems nexus and building a more resilient and sustainable future, said the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Ilaria Carnevali.
Speaking at the 2nd edition of the Water-Energy-Food Security-Ecosystems Nexus Forum (WEFE), Carnevali pointed out that in the MENA region, Morocco is widely recognised as a pioneer in the fields of energy transition and water desalination, thanks to its ambitious initiatives to promote sustainable energy solutions and secure water supplies.
This leadership, she maintained, is closely linked to the Water-Energy-Food Security-Ecosystems nexus, an integrated approach that plays a key role in addressing the interconnected challenges facing the country, particularly in managing the water crisis and the energy transition.
In this regard, she hailed the “notable progress” made by Morocco in the energy sector, by developing renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power, thus reducing its dependence on fossil fuels and contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions, recalling that this strategic transition is essential for the sustainable management of water and agriculture, which are deeply interrelated sectors.
“At UNDP, we are globally committed to promoting climate action, so as to generate benefits for the water, energy and food security sectors,” she added, asserting that the Programme aims to foster integrated solutions within the nexus, which is a central element of interconnected challenges.
Improving water use efficiency, increasing the share of renewable energies in the energy mix and promoting sustainable food systems are key steps towards building a future resilient to climate impacts, she insisted.
Looking to the future, she noted, it is imperative to adopt a global, multidimensional and integrated approach to the interconnected challenges of the Water-Energy-Food Security-Cosystems nexus.
Placed under the High Patronage of HM King Mohammed VI, the 2nd edition of the Nexus WEFE Forum is held on February 5-6 in Tangier under the theme “Multi-level cooperation for resilient development: putting the Water-Energy-Food Security-Ecosystems nexus into action.”
