ACEnergy Gets Conditional Nod for 250-MW Battery Project in NSW

  • The New South Wales (IPC) in Australia has greenlit a 250-MW/1,100-MWh energy storage project by ACEnergy Pty Ltd.
  • The facility will provide firming capacity that will help manage fluctuations in renewable energy supply and thus enhance grid stability.

The New South Wales Independent Planning Commission (IPC) in Australia has greenlit an up to 250-MW/1,100-MWh energy storage project put forward by domestic developer ACEnergy Pty Ltd.

The development approval for the Yanco battery energy storage system (BESS) was granted with conditions aimed at minimising the adverse effects of the project.

The list of conditions includes measures to mitigate potential biodiversity and visual impacts, enhance fire safety and minimise noise.

ACEnergy’s proposal was reviewed by the IPC following a series of objections made to the state department of planning, housing, and infrastructure.

According to the Commission, the project “would contribute positively to the State’s transition to a lower-carbon energy system and deliver benefits to the State’s electricity network by enhancing grid reliability and supporting the integration of renewable energy sources.”

The Yanco BESS will be located about seven kilometres south of Leeton in the Leeton Shire Council local government area. The facility will provide firming capacity that will help manage fluctuations in renewable energy supply and thus enhance grid stability.

The project comes with plans for the construction of a 450-metre (1,476-feet) transmission line that will connect the battery to Transgrid’s Yanco substation.
