- ACWA Power signed an MoU with Tunisia to explore a green hydrogen export project to Europe.
- The project, developed in three phases, will create 12 GW of renewable energy and aims to produce 200,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually.
- The initiative aligns with Tunisia’s 2023 green hydrogen strategy and supports ACWA Power’s expanding green hydrogen portfolio.
Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Tunisia to explore exporting green hydrogen to Europe. The agreement, announced recently, supports Tunisia’s renewable energy goals.
The project will unfold in three phases. ACWA Power will develop 12 GW of renewable energy, including storage, transmission, water desalination, electrolysers, and pipeline connections.
The initial phase will include 2 GW of electrolyser capacity and 4 GW of renewable energy. It aims to export 200,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually via the South2 Corridor pipeline, linking Tunisia with Italy, Austria, and Germany.
“This project aligns with Tunisia’s national green hydrogen strategy released in October 2023, targeting 8.3 million tonnes of green hydrogen and byproducts annually by 2050,” said Ouael Chouchene, Secretary of State for Energy Transition.
Tunisia’s Minister of Industry, Mines, and Energy, Fatma Thabet Chiboub, and ACWA Power CEO Marco Arcelli signed the MoU. This initiative supports ACWA Power’s aim to expand its green hydrogen portfolio, which includes the Neom Green Hydrogen Project, a joint venture with Air Products and Neom, and a project in Uzbekistan.
Last week, Tunisia signed an agreement with a joint venture of TotalEnergies, EREN Groupe, and Austria’s Verbund, highlighting its commitment to green hydrogen development.
