Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, has reassured Nigerians of a future marked by reliable and sustainable power supply. During a recent inspection of the Calabar power plant, Adelabu underscored the Federal Government’s steadfast commitment to reforming the nation’s power sector.

Adelabu highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to meet rising energy demands and ensure stability and efficiency in power generation and distribution. He also urged the oil and gas industry stakeholders to adopt a proactive approach, emphasising the government’s determination to address sectoral challenges effectively.

The Minister noted that the power sector is immensely important for both the government and the national economy. He revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had tasked him with evaluating power plants nationwide to enhance their performance and reliability.

Adelabu expressed satisfaction with the operational status of the Calabar Power Plant, which is currently a significant player in the regional power supply. He encouraged further advancements in power installation and generation as part of the sector’s growth strategy.

Significantly, the Calabar power plant privatisation to the Cross River State government is in progress. The Federal Privatization Council and the Federal Executive Council are currently reviewing the proposal. This move is expected to bolster the plant’s efficiency and management.

Prince Eka Williams, Cross River State Commissioner for Power and Energy, assured the public that the state government possesses the expertise required to manage the plant effectively.

Chiedu Ugbo, the plant’s managing director, reported that it is currently supplying power to a substantial portion of the South-South and South-East regions. However, Ugbo emphasised the urgent need for additional sub-transmission power stations to further enhance service delivery. He also voiced concerns over citizens’ vandalism, urging them to refrain from such damaging acts to ensure the continued stability of the power supply.
