AEDC Fails to Refund Customers Despite NERC Order

  • NERC ordered AEDC to refund customers for tariff errors.
  • AEDC is yet to comply despite the passing of the deadline.

Days have passed since the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) ordered Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) to refund customers for tariff errors. AEDC has yet to comply.

The company mistakenly applied Band A tariffs to all customers. NERC fined AEDC N200 million for this error and directed AEDC to refund customers by April 11.

The deadline has passed, but refunds have yet to be issued. Customers confirm they have yet to receive refunds.

NERC advises customers to escalate complaints if AEDC fails to act. An expert, Wumi Iledare, urges NERC to enforce penalties for unethical practices.

He emphasises the need for consumer protection and fair tariffs. Full metering is essential to reduce power theft. Tariff setting requires investments in infrastructure and gas-to-power conversion.
