Aef24: Africa Energy Forum to Commence June 25, Focusing on Energy Systems of the Future

  • Aef24 targets accelerated energy projects, policy and regulation, investment, technological innovation, regional cooperation and environmental and social impact.
  • Kenya, Togo, South Africa, Nigeria, and Ghana are some countries leading the continent in accelerating energy projects.

The Africa Energy Forum (aef), an annual event organised by EnergyNet Limited, will commence tomorrow, Tuesday, June 25th, and end Friday, June 28th, 2024, in Barcelona, Spain. This session, its 26th edition, will focus on the theme Energy Systems of the Future: Balancing Africa’s Needs with Global Goals.”

Ahead of the event, The Electricity Hub, the media partner for aef24, hosted a podcast with Abdoulaye Sylla, the portfolio manager and head of corporate development, and Georgia Emilios, a senior producer at EnergyNet.

Sylla and Emilios discussed the theme for aef24 and what participants and countries should look out for. According to Sylla, some of the envisioned impacts for this year, which the event has recorded since its inception in 1999, include:

  • Accelerated energy projects
  • Investment attraction
  • Policy and regulatory advancement
  • Technological innovation
  • Regional cooperation
  • Environmental and social impact.

During the session, Sylla and Emilios stated that several African countries are still leading the way in advancing energy access despite the continent’s energy crisis and slow adoption of energy projects. Some countries mentioned include Kenya, South Africa, Togo, Nigeria, and Ghana.

They reiterated that Africa has massive potential, encouraging African countries to see opportunities in the energy crisis and harness them by creating solutions to move the continent forward. They also called for everyone to challenge African leaders and push them to do more for the continent because “we have what it takes to end the energy crisis in Africa“.

“Our theme for aef this year simplifies what aef is about in the best way. The reason this is the theme is that, on a global level, we all acknowledge that Africa stands on the brink of a transformative change, where there are such unparalleled opportunities to harness the resources and advance the energy future so that it’s secure, just and profitable for everyone,” Emilios added.
