AfDB Provides Finance for Climate Resilience in Ethiopia

  • Ethiopia receives US$830,000 from AfDB.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has awarded a grant of US$830,000 to the government of Ethiopia to help combat the effects of climate change. The grant agreement was signed by Semerata Sewasew, Ethiopia’s Minister of State, Ministry of Finance and Kelvin Kariuki, the Vice President for Power, Energy, Climate and Green Growth, African Development Bank. This was on the sidelines of the recently concluded AfDB Annual Meetings in Accra, Ghana.

The grant award is a part of the pan-African bank’s Climate Investment Funds (CIF) pilot programme, implemented by AfDB. The funding will support integrating climate risk management, gender and resilience into economic planning and development in the Ziway-Shallah sub-basin. This is a closed water basin located in the Central Rift Valley of Ethiopia and is the most important wetland in the East African country.
